The Turbine Source Tech Tip #6: Key Contra Angle Maintenance Step

Josh Gross

Improve performance and extend the service life of your contra angle by including this one simple step!

Proper contra angle maintenance can dramatically improve performance and extend the service life of your handpiece. Most contra angle maintenance routines include applying cleaner and lubricant (by oil or spray) to the back portion of the handpiece. See below:

*For illustration purposes, we used a Star Type Contra Angle w/ a Push Button Latch Head.

While it is important to clean and lubricate the back portion, most problems with your contra angle will occur in the head portion of the handpiece. The bearings in the cartridge inside the head portion of the contra angle are far more delicate than the bearings in the back portion. This makes them much more susceptible to damage from normal wear, debris, and corrosion.

Include the step below to ensure your contra angle's head is thoroughly cleaned and lubricated:

After you have applied cleaner and lubricant to the back portion of the contra angle, remove any latch or standard bur from the chuck in the head of the contra angle. Apply two drops of oil, or a quick burst of spray cleaner/lubricant, to the inside of the empty chuck. See below:

You are now ready to expel the excess cleaner and lubricant by either connecting to your motor and running for 20-30 seconds, or by connecting to your automatic cleaning/lubricating machine.

By including this step to your contra angle maintenance routine, you will optimize your handpiece's performance while reducing downtime and costly repairs.
